I rarely set out to photograph anything, and don't use big, image-stabilized lenses; they're too heavy and expensive to use 'on the hoof'. I have used a variety of compact zooms, including the excellent Minolta Z1, and a Sony DSC-H7. Birds are digiscoped except those within about 30 metres range, then I use a Canon 30D and Tamron 200-500mm zoom
