NB; Edible Frog (Rana kl. esculenta); a hybridogenetic form originating from crosses between Marsh and Pool Frogs, it is the water frog of the region. Marsh Frog is an introduction, rare and very localised both in the Vienne and the Brenne. Pool Frog occurs apparently on 2% surface area of the département Indre, including the Brenne, so again very rare. Edible Frogs are extremely variable in both colour and size, with habitat preference as Marsh and Pool Frogs. The Edible Frog is one of the few animals in the world that is a fertile mix of two different species, as although similar but genetically different species are known to mate, it is very rare that their offspring will be able to breed. The kl. (=klepton) of the Edible Frog's scientific name indicates that the species is made up of chromosomes that have been stolen from other species. The esculenta part of the scientific name is Latin for edible as this species is one of the most commonly eaten Frog species in the world.
